Who We Are

Sanctuary for Families is dedicated to the safety, healing and self-determination of victims of domestic violence and related forms of gender violence. Through comprehensive services for our clients and their children, and through outreach, education and advocacy, we strive to create a world in which freedom from gender violence is a basic human right.

What We Do

We work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. We provide holistic legal, counseling, shelter and economic empowerment services to survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence in New York. Clients can also receive support including pantry services, public benefits assistance, case management, children's programming, literacy programs and tutoring, and more.

Within our Legal Center, every year approximately 1,000 pro bono attorneys also partner with Sanctuary to offer legal advice and representation to survivors of gender-based violence. Each attorney is paired with a Sanctuary mentor and given access to extensive training materials. The projects attorneys can assist with include the Anti-Trafficking Initiative (ATI), the Incarcerated Gender Violence Survivors Initiative, the Family Law Project, the Immigration Intervention Project (IIP), and the Matrimonial and Economic Justice Project. Our volunteer opportunities provide more information on what support for each project entails.
