Who We Are

The Legal Aid Society is a private, not-for-profit legal services organization, the oldest and largest in the nation, dedicated since 1876 to providing quality legal representation to low- income New Yorkers. It is dedicated to one simple but powerful belief: that no New Yorker should be denied access to justice because of poverty. The Society handles 300,000 individual cases and matters annually and provides a comprehensive range of legal services in three areas: the Civil, Criminal and Juvenile Rights Practices.

What We Do

Volunteers are placed into the Legal Aid Society's Attorney Emeritus Program which incorporates experienced senior volunteers directly into Legal Aid Society projects. Volunteers are asked identify a practice area preference and provide a resume and expected availability to volunteer. The Pro Bono Practice then contacts one of the Society’s community or court based offices which are located throughout the five boroughs, to determine if the interest and experience of the volunteer matches the practice’s needs and ability to supervise. Initial volunteer placements are for six months, but can be extended depending on the unit’s needs.
