Who We Are

JASA, established in 1968, offers a uniquely comprehensive range of programs to meet the needs and preferences of older adults throughout NYC. The agency’s mission reflects JASA’s vision and philosophy: to sustain and enrich the lives of the aging in the NY metropolitan area so that they can remain in the community with dignity and autonomy. JASA maximizes opportunities for fulfillment and safety with strength-affirming programs that help older adults of diverse ethnicities, cultures, language preferences and physical abilities live better lives in their homes and communities. JASA’s Legal Services for Elder Justice (JASA/LSEJ) was established in 1981 to provide legal services to low income and at-risk older adults in fulfillment of JASA’s mission of assisting older adults remain in their homes and communities. Since its inception, JASA/LSEJ has been committed to providing the highest quality legal services and identifying innovative ways to better serve older individuals and the communities in which they live.

What We Do

The focus of LSEJ is on those areas that affect low income older adults, including evictions, foreclosures and real property fraud; SSI and Social Security; and healthcare (including Medicaid, Medicare and long-term care) issues. LSEJ represents clients in state and federal trial and appellate courts and at administrative hearings. LSEJ provides training and consultation to staff in social service agencies and senior centers and to other community professionals regarding the legal rights of older adults.
