Who We Are

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is a nonprofit, legal services organization with offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, and Newburgh. PLS provides free, civil legal services to indigent prisoners in New York State correctional facilities. Our services cover the following areas of law: Prisoners’ Civil Rights; Disability/ADA Issues; Sentence and Jail Time Calculations; Excessive Use of Force; First Amendment Rights; Habeas Corpus; Parole and Reentry Issues; Medical Parole; Inadequate Medical and Mental Health Care; Family Law; Immigration; Clemency; Prison Disciplinary Proceedings; and Conditional Parole for Deportation Only.

What We Do

Our volunteer attorney opportunities involve addressing the needs and rights of people incarcerated in New York State prisons. The work is varied and can be tailored to the strengths and interests of the volunteer. It may include, for example: drafting administrative appeals challenging prison disciplinary hearing dispositions; challenging disciplinary hearing dispositions in state court via Article 78 proceedings; drafting administrative advocacy letters on behalf of incarcerated clients, seeking medical care, mental health care, protective custody, or other needs; drafting and submitting comprehensive applications for Medical Parole, Executive Clemency, or Conditional Parole for Deportation Only; or legal research of various topics related to the rights of incarcerated people.
