Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition

The Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York was founded in 1975 as the New York State Citizens Coalition. The Coalition provides support, information and advocacy for foster, kinship and adoptive families in the Empire State and the professionals who serve them.
We are an advocacy organization for adoptive, foster, kinship and guardianship families and children in the foster care system. We would like to have a volunteer attorney who can help our families with legal advocacy issues. Legal Advocacy issues can include representing foster parents at fair hearings, in court, educational proceedings, and other forums where having a legal advocate would be beneficial to the family including the child. Legal advocacy can also include helping relatives of the children in the foster care system obtain their foster care certifications and guardianship in order to make more equitable the services and resources the families of the children in care receive. In addition, Attorneys may accompany foster, kinship, or guardianship parents to Family Court to represent their point-of-view during certain proceedings where these parents have a right to be heard as a judge is making decisions in regard to the best interests of the child or children who reside with this foster, kinship, or guardianship parent. This position may also include phone consultations on calls to our 24 hour helpline when callers are looking for some legal advice or suggestions. Attorneys who are adoptive parents, foster parents or former foster parents, kinships parents, adopted persons, former foster youth, or members of the original families of adopted persons or children who spent pieces of their childhood in foster care are encouraged to apply. However, all applicants with a heart for our work are most welcome to apply. |
